The People's Bike Shop

Hammer And Cyclery is a full service (with limited parts from donations at Burning Man) bike shop with a full complement of tools plunked down on the Playa to help Burners everywhere have the smoothest, sweetest, safest (reddest) week possible on their Burning Man bike. We maintain regular hours staffed every day (Monday to Monday). Stop by for spoke work, safety consultations, workshops, tire pressure checks, or just to swap crash stories and celebrate the color red.

All of this is made possible through our bicycle rental program (contribute today!). Hammer And Cyclery rents AND DELIVERS bicycles for Burning Man (rentals supplied by Re-Cycle) (all monetary transactions occur prior to the start of Burning Man). The rental fee (and deposit) gets you a comfy Beach Cruiser or a rugged Mountain Bike (choose your ride on the Playa).

If you choose to contribute by renting a bicycle for Burning Man, you can pick out your bike on the Playa, but please give us your height so we can have a good mix of bikes for Burners to choose from.

Then you will pick up your bicycle on the Playa (address announced in July). We will be trucking in all of the bikes for renters to pick up at their convenience at our camp and we will be staying all week to help any cyclists who need our assistance to stay cyclists during Burning Man. The bike must be returned in the same shape that it is rented. A required $100.00 deposit will be refunded if the bike comes back damage free. Necessary repairs (beyond cleaning and re-tuning) will be paid for from your deposit.

RENTERS PLEASE NOTE: Any mechanic work offered during the Burning Man festival will be our gift to you. Do not expect us to solve all of your cycling problems as we may not have the parts, tools, or stamina necessary to fix all issues. Renters are ultimately responsible for the condition of their bike.

Finally, it's okay if you fall in love. Many Burners have discovered a unique and almost mystical connection to their bicycle after a good Burn. If this happens, don't suffer from separation anxiety. Take your new friend home and introduce her/him to your mother. We will keep your deposit and wish the two of you all the best in your new life together.

2012 will be our third year on the Playa. Last year we laid hands on as many as 500 bicycles, but only three of our rentals came back with repair issues. If there is one thing we learned it is that there are a lot of bikes on the Playa and not a lot of us. In 2012 we'll be bringing more mechanics, more tools, more bikes, and more red.
